My very first post! (If you want to know more about me then check out the ‘About’ section in the top right corner.)
About three years ago, when I was 19, I had terrible acne which was affecting me on a daily basis and drastically reducing my self confidence. Also, I had not long started a new relationship so was looking to explore contraception methods. I went to visit my doctor about both of these problems and was immediately prescribed the contraceptive pill. Looking back I am a bit shocked that this was suggested straight away; I now know the dangers attached to the pill and how it can affect you in many harmful ways. If you want to read more on this there are many articles online which list the symptoms, here is one of thousands.
Fast forward about two and a half years and a whole heap of research later and I decided that it was time to give the pill the push. Sure it gave me clear skin; it meant I could practice safe sex and it was convenient BUT there were many negatives. Amongst others I experienced;
- Very negative moods,
- Irritability,
- Period pains which were worse than usual, and
- Weight gain.
Now these are just what I experiences, many people do not get any symptoms at all. So the time came to give up the pill.
It has been nearly two months now and I have noticed that my moods are so much better. Before, I would argue with my partner all the time over the silliest of things. Now we haven’t argued at all since I came off the pill!
The two negatives of coming off the pill are having to use condoms and the fact that my acne is back. For contraception I am currently using condoms but this isn’t ideal as I like to be as natural as possible and it is kind of a mood-killer. In conjunction with this I am also using the FemCal app for iPhone which uses temperature and a range of other factors to calculate fertile and infertile days. I have only been using this for a few weeks so can’t comment on its effectiveness yet but I will do a review when I have used it for a couple more months.
In regards to the acne, I am doing my best to get rid of it naturally. I am using a combination of diet and skincare to help shift it. I will be sharing my journey towards clear skin and better health in later posts.
What is your experience with the pill? Would you prefer to use natural methods?
